Math
Purpose: To develop mathematically literate students who value mathematics, have confidence in their own math abilities, and who can communicate, problem solve and reason mathematically.
Philosophy: Learn with the Best utilizes a math program called Everyday Mathematics. This program was developed at the University of Chicago and focuses on exposing children to a wide variety of mathematic concepts through games, daily integrated classroom experiences, and both large and small group instruction. It is a spiraling math program which simply means that math concepts are introduced and revisited frequently throughout the school year to help build strong mathematic foundations.
Goals:
- Develop number sense including counting, number sets, and one-to-
one correspondence
- Sort and classify by color, shape, and size
- Create and continue basic patterns
- Develop an awareness of concepts related to estimation,
measurement, clock, calendar, money, and temperature
- Use graphs, pictures, and diagrams to solve problems
