Language Arts
Purpose: To develop listening, speaking, reading, writing, and thinking skills that are essential for learning and interaction in our world of language.
Philosophy: Language and literacy skills are essential processes for learning and interacting in our language based world. Purposeful teaching and a balanced language arts program will provide children rich experiences with reading, speaking, writing, and listening. Children at all stages of growth have opportunities to develop appropriate skills in each area to establish a love of language and literacy.
Goals:
- Develop book and print awareness
- Develop phonemic awareness and knowledge of alphabetic principles
- Demonstrate decoding and word recognition strategies and skills
- Begin to “track” and use left-to-right sweep when “reading” a book
- Retell a familiar story in own words including discussions and asking
questions
- Connect stories to life experiences
- Make predictions before, during, and after reading
- Use drawings or symbols to convey ideas and information
- Use developmental spelling including random letters to write
- Write from left-to-right and top-to-bottom
- Demonstrate ability to connect writing to drawings
